Electricity
4.2.1 Current, potential difference and
resistance
Electrical circuits and components:
An electric circuit is a complete loop that usually includes a
source of electrical power and one or more components connected
together by conducting wires.
Series circuits - this is a circuit with a single path
Parallel circuits - this is a circuit which branches and
recombines in places.

, Circuit symbols
Voltmeter - measures potential difference in volts, must be
attached in parallel
Ammeter - measures current in amps, must be attached in series
Resistor - opposes current
LDR (light dependent resistor) - resistance depends on light
Thermistor - resistance depends on temperature
Variable resistor - used in dimmer switches and volume control
Diode - only lets the current in one direction
LED (light emitting diode)
Fuse - safety device used in plugs
Cell - long arm is positive
