a . Select a condition covered in this course that interests you or is
relevant to your nursing practice. Identify the condition you’ve
selected.
Selected Condition: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
As an aspiring psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I chose major
depressive disorder because it is among the most prevalent mental health
conditions I will come across in my practice. Depressive disorders are
among the leading causes of global disease burden, but there has been
limited progress in understanding the causes of and treatments for these
disorders (Fried et al., 2022). That is why I want to have a comprehensive
understanding of it so that I can recognize symptoms at an early stage,
provide supportive treatment, and enable patients to improve their quality
of life. A person's mental health affects not just their mental state but also
their physical health, their relationships, and their general functioning.
Because of this, it is critical to have a comprehensive understanding of this
condition in my future practice.
b. Briefly explain your rationale for selecting this particular
condition. What influenced your selection?
Depression has a major impact on people's quality of life and it is also the
main determinant of suicide deaths, an element that is often ignored in the
global burden of disease estimates (Moreno-Agostino et al., 2021). I chose
this condition because I have witnessed the impact that mental health has
on many of the individuals in my life, including friends and family. I'm from
Nepal, a country where mental health is not commonly understood and is
frequently viewed as taboo. Growing up, I witnessed numerous individuals
struggle with mental health concerns without access to adequate resources
or medical care, which ultimately resulted in neglect, suffering, and, in
some cases, suicide. My desire to have a deeper understanding of it was
motivated by the awareness that it can have an effect on an individual's day-
to-day life, relationships, and their overall well-being. This has motivated
me to acquire more education so that I can make a difference in the world.
As an aspiring psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I aim to truly
understand the experiences of my patients and offer them care and support
that can enhance their quality of life.
