Critical Analysis of Temperance, Dietetics, and Recreation
Introduction
Ellen G. White is one prolific writer whose works came into light in the mid-90s.
Throughout her life, she has successfully published numerous pieces that have been
quintessential across the generations. In her book, Education, she offers a different view of what
being educated means – aside from the mere knowledge passed on in tuition blocks – bagging 35
chapters that exude pure wisdom. Of all the chapters, this paper takes a keen interest in analyzing
the 22nd and 23rd, i.e., Temperance and Dietetics, and Recreation respectively. The first discusses
the importance of proper nutrition, which imparts optimization of the physical, moral, and mental
proponents of life, viably attributed by nature’s essence. Also, the chapter insists on refraining on
‘unethical’ substance in our bodies such as drugs and confectionary substance. In the chapter of
recreation, she elaborates on the matters of one’s energies, linked to the activities one can handle
to improve the three latter aspects, and at the same time offer tranquility in life. Therefore, her
message will be interpreted using the eight critical thinking elements, i.e., commitment, decision
making, reflection, creativity, acquisition of information, analysis, debate, and structuring
arguments.
Reflection
Through the two chapters, Ellen has brought up her points in a manner that she describes
what it would be like if people followed her advice, as well as the consequences of doing the
opposite. She writes, “By pursuing one line of thought exclusively, the mind often becomes
unbalanced. But every faculty may be safely exercised if the mental and physical powers are
equally taxed, and the subjects of thought are varied” (209). By that, it ensures we enable our
