Assessment Overview
Types of Examination
• Inspection:
Observe external genitalia for lesions, discharge, swelling, or asymmetry.
Assess hair distribution and perineal area.
• Palpation:
Evaluate for tenderness, nodules, or masses (vulva, Bartholin’s glands).
• Speculum Examination:
Inspect vaginal walls and cervix for color, lesions, discharge, and cervical
os appearance.
• Bimanual Examination:
Palpate uterus (size, position, consistency, mobility) and adnexa for
masses or tenderness.
• Rectovaginal Examination:
Evaluate posterior uterus and cul-de-sac; check for masses, nodularity,
or tenderness (especially in suspected endometriosis or malignancy).
Normal Findings
• Vulva without lesions, discharge, or erythema.
• Vaginal mucosa pink, moist, without ulcerations or abnormal discharge.
• Cervix pink, smooth, with small round os (nulliparous) or slit-like os
(multiparous).
• Uterus anteverted, smooth, firm, non-tender.
• Adnexa non-palpable or small, non-tender.
