Diversity management in the workplace is one of the important factors of running a
business smoothly by corporate their business with multicultural and multiracial of the
employees (Mayhew 2019). Diversity can generally be defined as individuals’ differences
that formed by different groups of people which in terms of age, gender, race, religion,
cultural background, sexual orientation, cultural background, physical abilities, and
disabilities (Yogi 2018, p.25). Approaches to diversity are divided into 2 approaches which
were the business case and moral case. The business case defined as to prevent diverse
employee to free from discrimination issues and its benefit was to lower the employee
turnover rate and improve the productivity of the organisation (Business Case for Diversity
and Inclusion 2020). Others, in the moral case, are focused more on fairness and equity
which can be called Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) (Dijk, Engen & Paauwe 2012,
p.74). By following then, this essay conducted the study of diversity terms on McDonald’s
and further detail on the linkages between the two cases for top quality diversity
management.
Background
McDonald’s Corporation is one of the world’s largest American multinational fast-food
chain which founded by Richard and Maurice in San Bernardino, California and United
States, in 1940 (Tyler 2018). According to McDonald’s American Corporation (n.d.),
McDonald’s began with the well-known brand worldwide because of their famous fast-food,
mainly hamburgers and now offered with more than 50 food and beverages products such as
cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, wraps, french-fries, Mc-flurry, sundaes,
chicken porridges, pies, soft drinks, coffee and others (McDonald’s Corporation 2019).
McDonald’s is a globalisation business as it operated across North, Latin American, Europe,
Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa (McDonald’s c. 2019). The mission of McDonald’s is
to acts as the best customers’ place to eat and drink while enjoying their food and beverages
at McDonald’s (Meyer 2019). In fact, McDonald had recruit diverse employees in the
workplace which will gather different people to have different viewpoints in looking at things
that resulted in great and creative decision making (Schubert & Tavassoli 2020, p.274).
Meanwhile, it would help organisation have an opportunity to grow in the market (Dickson
2020). The statement above has been clearly shown linkage with the business case of recruit
diversity of employees by helping McDonald’s to improve profit margin in organisation.
, Business Case
In addition, McDonald’s also practicing diversity approach management in their
workplace. McDonald’s had emphasized the leadership development program for diverse
employees in order to boost their multiracial relationship to be getting closer with each-others
(Gardner 2010). McDonald's had provided fairness and equality training development to
motivate their employees to start from the bottom level of learning fry, cook, and then
transform to crew chief which then will be reaching to the top managerial level of being an
executive manager (Alaa 2016). Besides, McDonald’s as a multi-cultural organisation would
encourage their diverse employees to give feedback by getting widely shared attitudes,
values, beliefs, norms, and knowledge sharing because it will improve an organisation
strategic business’s objective.
Moral Case
McDonald’s is fulfilled with the equity approach as McDonald’s is committed to Equal
Employment Opportunity (EEO). Equal Employment Opportunity is defined as showing
justice in treating their employees in the workplace (Rapp 2018, p.339). As stated by
McDonald’s (2019), employees in McDonald’s was feeling meaningful in working in such a
great environment that adhere with shared value relationship with several community-based
organisation which impacts employees to created synergy in the workplace and without any
discrimination issued that arises. McDonald's was concern about their employees' work-life
balance by promoting Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) lawsuits to treat their
employee’s fairness to ensure that they are free from discrimination issues such as bullying,
sexual harassment, and unlawful discrimination. The statement above has briefly emphasized
the moral case of treating employees fairly and equally in McDonald’s workplace. Instead,
McDonald’s has gone through both equity and diversity approach.
Analysis and Discussion
The problematic issue that faced by McDonald’s is facing gender discrimination issues as
stated that there are 43% of female’s employee in McDonald’s whereas 57% is represented as
male employees (Seguir 2011). Furthermore, McDonald’s has been found out that male
employees were prohibited discrimination of involving sexual harassment against the female
employee to let women feeling anxious and voluntarily quit from McDonald’s workplace
(Charles & McDonald 2016, p.118). Moreover, McDonald’s has paid fewer wages to female
