1. Explain the rationale behind the use of tazobactam with piperacillin in Zosyn.
Combining the tazobactam with the piperacillin in Zosyn will help the penicillin to kill the
bacteria effectively. The tazobactam will inactivate the enzyme call beta-lactamase by inhibiting
the enzyme. By using the two drugs together the drug therapy will be more effective.
2. Which order will the nurse implement first? Explain your answer.
The nurse will make sure to do the blood cultures from the two sites first. The blood samples are
done first so the physician and nurses can know if the antibiotic is working. The other reason is
you don’t want the blood sample to have any antibiotic, the culture could be read incorrectly.
3. What concerns or drug interactions will the nurse be aware of with the use of Zosyn and the
other medications ordered for Mr. G.?
The nurse should be aware of the drugs ibuprofen and warfarin interacting with the Zosyn. These
drugs may increase bleeding effect due to the increased anticoagulant. The nurse needs to
monitor the patients PT/INR levels to make sure that the patient is safely taking the amount of
warfarin needed.
4. What parameters need to be monitored to determine whether the Zosyn is working? Explain
your answer.
The nurse should monitor the patient’s vitals to make sure that the patient is comfortable. The
