The development of leadership skills is essential to become an effective leader. Leaders
are made or created by learning from those before and those being led. The three leadership areas
I selected are Communication skills, Delegation skills, and Feedback skills for Challenging the
Process and Enabling Others to Act.
In utilizing communication skills, I would challenge the process by having open
discussions to learn more about each other. Encourage thinking outside the box and the ability
communicating those ideas. Enabling others to act is encouraging open, honest communication
while being supportive can inherently cause a more productive workplace. Delegating to each
other and management is challenging the process. Delegating responsibilities can be a
challenging risk but so is ensuring the job gets done, “Do What You Say You Will Do”
(Kouzes, Posner, 2012). Encouraging and supporting those decisions are enabling others to act.
Employees need to feel as much a part of decision making as managers and being encouraging
and
supportive makes your employees believe in you, giving them a sense of responsibility while
enabling them the opportunity to learn more. Taking risks to improve processes shows others you
are not afraid to try something new. “Leaders seek and accept challenging opportunities to test
the ability.” (Kouzes, Posner, 2012). Challenge the process by requesting feedback from
employees concerning your leadership and encourage that trait in each other. Encourage positive
and negative feedback to and from each other as learning tools, enabling others to act the same.
“The practice of enabling others to act presents the idea that leaders must actively engage their
followers in the decisions being made in the organization to foster collaboration.” (Kouzes,
