The Importance of Nursing Research
Nursing research is an essential aspect of the healthcare field. Evidence based practice is
a guideline for nursing and that is only made possible by research. Nursing research plays a
pivotal role in the development of quality patient care, skills and overall nursing behaviors.
Nurses need to have an understanding of research because nursing is constantly changing. Nurses
now have the responsibility to evolve and use the science of research to grow their practice.
There are several types of research designs that nurses can intergrade throughout their practice
including quantitative research and qualitative research. The research includes sampling and
different practices to help create a reliable source that will essentially improve nursing quality.
Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is an important design because it uses numbers and measurement in
order to determine how effective an intervention may be. Using numbers eliminates questions
and allows for a reliable source. Man -Song-Hing (2002) conducts a study to show the
effectiveness of a quantitative research design. In a test to detect the chances of stroke in patients
taking warfarin, the outcome of 3 out of 100 patients, is a more direct and easily read number
then just statistically saying the changes are low.
An experimental design is an important part of quantitative research. It uses variables and
allows testing. In many situations clinical trials are held with the experimental design, in which
there is testing and many times a placebo. An important aspect of this design is having a control
