2. Response of a biological
attack a. Nurses’ Role:
i. Be involved in all stages of prevention and related activities
ii. Educate others about disasters and how to prepare for and respond to
them iii. Keep up to date on latest recommendations and advances in life-
saving
measures
b. Includes: Triaging victims with serious versus minor injuries, prioritizing care of
victims, and transferring those requiring immediate attention to medical
facilities.
-Triage includes freeing acute care beds by determining which clients can be
discharge (those who are hospitalized for diagnosis or observation).
-Other roles include giving tetanus shots, first aid, and medical attention to
victims.
-Shelter nursing is a unique role of the nurse that can extend into the recovery
phase of the disaster.
c. The focus of disaster triage is to: Do as little as possible, for the greatest number,
in the shortest period of time.
