Assignment C - Part 1
New Cutting Edge Advanced – An Evaluation
The coursebook provided for assessment is a generally vivid one which tests students brilliance
and abilities with a clearly structured and insightful unit. With text at appropriate level for students
to be taught, the coursebook is to be used for advanced students due to the fact that its materials
get more challenging with progression from learning about grammar at the beginning of the unit
and then moving to more difficult language activities that has to do with writing reports to check
language.
As a teacher I have come across a lot of coursebooks in the past but no one beats cutting edge
advanced in terms of teaching due to the fact that this book follows the objectives of the lesson
which is to develop advanced student’s language proficiency. The coursebook has a warmer, body
and plenary which is key when setting up a plan for language lessons.

The coursebook includes a language outline, grammar reference pages, vocabulary lists and many
communication activities with attention given to all skills coupled with activities ranging from
Reading and listening to writing giving the students the opportunities to learn new things however
there is very little attention given to speaking activities. While most of the activities are paired
works, this unit also has activities that students can do independently. The materials to be used are
presented and there is a good variety such as pictures, articles, diagrams etc.
The main focus on this unit is globalisation which basically affects everyone and students will have
a cultural knowledge of, so planning a lesson and following the activities in the coursebook would
be fun and engaging as the students would also be able to relate to the topic keeping in mind that
language would already be graded to meet students’ needs and to prevent any possibility of
offending anyone’s religion or perspective as we focus on genuine and realistic problems and at
the end of lesson there is a variety of correction activities to check students understanding.

Generally, this is a very well thought out lesson unit designed to make students share ideas, come
up with concepts of their own and use target language appropriately. Although the information
and layout of this unit is appropriate but there are still a few issues with the coursebook which
include coursebook being too choked up with all the images and exercises squeezed onto pages,
lack of teacher’s guide with lesson plans, procedures and answers, not enough pronunciation
practices to test accuracy, absence of digital materials and class tests to check students
understanding.

In conclusion, materials used in this coursebook are appropriate and suitable, placed in proper
context and examples are meaningful for advanced level students which are reason why I would
most definitely include the coursebook into my teaching curriculum with some extra additions.
