600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials are written or spoken texts which are produced by native speakers for non-
teaching purposes and therefore do not come from a coursebook. The use of authentic materials in
teaching English has become a big priority in recent times, as there is a general interest in listening
lessons having a connection to real life listening situations. They can give advantage to both
learners and teachers such that learners will be exposed to meaningful experience with a real
language and for teacher, I found that I tend to be more creative and versatile in designing my
lessons. By introduction of authentic materials, I found that I added more excitement to my
activities. I used an authentic reading material which talks about the top 10 best movie
theatres in the world as an attempt to make the lesson more fun and engaging because my
students are already of age to travel and visit new places on their own and be confident
enough coupled with the ability to apply knowledge learned during lessons in real
communicative situations while also motivating and guiding them towards language they
need for particular context.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to consider the needs of my students and that’s what I have
done here by selecting a text which I believe would interest the students in every possible way, a
text which is relevant to the student’s needs and lastly, students would be able to use outside the
classroom especially the ones that love to travel and see new places. The chosen text would have a
positive effect on student motivation, give authentic cultural knowledge, expose them to real
language and lastly support a more creative approach to teaching and all of these are very
important reasons as to why I selected this text. I specifically selected the 12 vocabulary items
because in order for students to understand and engage in class activities adapted from the text,
they need to be able to comprehend items which seem complex and are key to understanding the
material and that is what I feel the selected items are, considering the level of the students. Few
changes were made to the original reading text based on two reasons, firstly, due to some
vocabulary not being relevant to the student’s immediate needs and secondly, the original text
being quite lengthy and bulky as I wouldn’t want to overwhelm the students.
