, QUESTION 1
1.1.1. List the key elements of a permit to work procedure
According to Boyle, (2019:52), the key elements in a permit to work procedure are as
follows:
− a clear statement of the aims of the procedure
− the steps to be taken before a permit to work is issued and the arrangements for
issuing it
− the steps to be followed while the permit to work is in force
− the steps to be taken when the permit to work is being withdrawn, either temporarily
or permanently
1.1.2. Discuss the uses of permits to work and link these uses within an
organization.
Uses of permit to work procedures
Using permit to work procedures results from the recognition that a high-risk task has to
be carried out. Typical high-risk tasks for which permit to work procedures are used
include:
− Work with electrical equipment, particularly high-voltage electrical
equipment or equipment powered by electricity. The main purposes of the
permit to work procedure in these circumstances are to ensure that the equipment
is isolated, and if necessary earthed, before the task begins, and that the
equipment is re-energized only when it is safe to do so (Boyle, 2019:52).
