, Types of Bleeding
Classified by type of vessel damaged:
• Arteries: profuse bleeding, blood spurts
out in time with the heart beat
– Volume of circulating blood falls
down rapidly
– Blood is bright red
• Veins: blood is dark red, and gushes out
of injured vessel
• Capillaries: bleeding is brisk, blood loss
is slight
– Bleeding into tissues, bruising, is
common in these vessels
In all the three, bleeding may be external
or internal

• Laceration; crushing or ripping force results in tears or
lacerations
– Bleeding is slight
– Has a lot of tissue damage
– Often contaminated with germs, hence high risk of
infection
• Abrasion (graze); superficial wound in which topmost
layer of skin are scrapped off
– Caused by sliding fall or friction burn
– May contain embedded foreign objects that may cause
infection
