Smoking, gender, and peer influence
The aim of this study was to investigate whether gender and peer influence
respectively, could significantly affect the probability of individuals participating in smoking
behaviours using chi-squared. A smoking questionnaire was devised, to test the hypotheses
using a sample of 78 participants through opportunity sampling. The findings yielded through
chi-squared analysis indicated that gender had no significant influence on the probability of
individuals’ participating in smoking behaviours, but peer influence yielded a significant
influence on the individuals’ probability of participating in smoking behaviours. The results
indicated that participating in smoking behaviours may no longer be influenced by gender but
is significantly impacted by peer influence.
