• Cleisthenes (Klys.thuh-neez) gained power in Athens around 500 B.C
• Cleisthenes came from a rich and powerful family in Athens, yet he didn’t want the aristocrats to run the
government.
• Even though his family is from the aristocratic social class, he didn’t want the aristocrats to have so much powe
and influence in the government.
• He called on the support of the people to overthrow the aristocracy once and for all, and so he did.
• Cleisthenes established a completely new form of government , he developed the world first democracy,
