Outcomes/EvaluatonGastrostomy feeding is a method of providing nutrients to clients who cannot consume foods orally. An artificial external opening is created into the stomach for nutritional support.Descripton of Skill
Critical illness/trauma; Neurological and muscular disorders; Cancer that affects the head and neck, upper GI tract; Gastrointestinal disorders; Respiratory failure with prolonged intubation Inadequate oral intake.Pre: Review the prescription and purpose, identify the patient, provide teaching, evaluate client understanding, preform hand hygiene, Set up equipment, Provide privacy. Intra: Abdominal assessment, raise bed, position patient to high-Fowler's (if possible), assess nares, use correct procedure to insert tube, check placement; Aspirate gently to collect gastric contents, testing pH (4 or less is expected), and assess odor, color, and consistency. Confirm placement with an x-ray.Post: maintain Tube, measure output, provide comfort, oral hygiene, abdominal assessment
