Morimura
Morimura
Morimura a famous Japanese artist, (born in 1951)
Artist material practice
Morimura is well known for making his own costume (films, movies and paintings). In his
paintings morimura mostly makes computer generated pictures of himself in another painting
(he crops part of his body and makes it seem that he is in the painting). Morimura tends to
make his art (computer generated images) in western pop culture and historical icons.
Morimura specifically uses inkjet printer, rather than a normal printer because the ink jet
printer sprays specific colour’s of ink, rather that powdered ink then a normal printer (this helps
the painting seem more colourful and pretty to people), he also uses oils for painting on canvas.
Conceptual practice
Morimura is a Japanese appropriation artist, he’s a director, actor and a costume maker. He is
well known for being a solo artist he makes his art by borrowing other images of a historical art
and adds his own touch to the painting. Morimura does not think art is something to be
competitive about he thinks art is for entertainment purposes. Morimura explores the different
identity of roles in gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class and time. Morimura was born in Osaka he
studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Kyoto city university of arts. Some of Morimura’s art are
Inner dialogue with Frida Kahlo, self portrait of after Marilyn Monroe, Monna Lisa in its origin
and more. Some of Morimura’s paintings are expensive and some aren’t, one of his paintings
cost about $500, and the others are $1000 (the bigger artwork).
Structural features
Morimura’s painting ‘’the inner dialogue with Frida Kahlo’’, was the biggest project ever made
by morimura (took 10 years to be completed). ‘’the inner dialogue with Frida Kahlo’’ is about a
famous young Mexican girl who can paint/draw very well in the mid-1907, she also was very
well known for making her paintings very realistic (showing what identity the person is she is
drawing, human body figures and more features to show her uniqueness). Morimura wanted to
incorporate how Frida Kahlo had her ups and downs of art making. Some people did not like
her art and some people liked it, she kept on doing what she liked and got her goal. This specific
art work of morimura was made by a chromogenic print, he made this painting in 2001 (the art
work is 134 times 120 cm).
Cultural features
In the artwork ‘’An inner dialogue with Frida Kahlo’’, people can see that there is a lot of
colour’s in the painting. You can see the figure of Frida (Morimura) has a white ghostly white
ting of colour, the lips are blood red, flowers on his/her hair are bright colour’s (red, pink,
purple, white), her/his hair is in a bun with a hair accessory to hold it. Morimura wanted to
interpret this painting but with his own features instead for Frida. Morimura becomes Frida
Kahlo to show people how her life was in her time, he is showing how beauty can change
