Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)
CIS375: Human-Computer Interaction
When playing a game no one really buys the game anymore, you just download it. A lot of
people rather download the game the go out and buy it. When you are streaming a game online,
you can play with millions of people. You do not have to wait for someone to be in front of you
to play the game. A lot of people are steering towards this new way of gaming. Soon there is not
going to be a need for board games anymore.
In a face-to-face game thing are serious in a game of checkers. The difference between online
and in person is the social experience. In an online game people can build friendships, but also
able to become someone else for the entire time that they are playing online. Online users can
escape and play as an avatar, have superpowers, whereas playing face to face they must be
themselves. They can feel and be comfortable within themselves and with the other users online.
When playing a board game, you know where you and the other players are playing. However,
when playing a game online or using other mobile devices, you never know where the users are
or even who they are. Playing face to face vs playing on mobile devices is a different type of
environment.
Everyone has their own superstitions when it comes to games. Some people want to wear their
lucky hats, while others believe in a luck number. For some people they get nervous when
playing face to face, as with playing online those same nerves does not quite exist anymore or
have the same impact on them. When playing games and being able to perform at a high-level
user want to be comfortable and be in an environment that makes them feel that same
comfortability. For some people I believe that when playing face to face the environment plays a
very important part of the way a game is played, or a user performs.
