Leadership Experience
First and foremost leadership is a relationship between leaders and followers. A more in-
depth relationship between leaders and those teammates develops when you try to get an
understanding what certain people look for, and make them want to follow your lead as a team
leader. I can recall a time where I had to lead a team. I was actually a senior in high school when
I was a cheerleader in high school and I was given the role of being the team captain. At times it
became completely frustrating because you want to try to please everyone, and make everyone
happy but that’s impossible because you can’t please everyone, and make everyone happy. I had
to grow to realize that we had to work as a team and create a strong foundation in order to move
forward, and be successful as one. I had to learn to get some tough skin, because I was always
the type that wanted to please everyone, and make sure everyone got the requests that they
wanted. Although that’s what I always wanted, there were times that I couldn’t grant those
wishes. Upon takin upon my role I felt as if I had to develop a certain style in order to be a
successful leader; I chose to go with an indirect approach. I chose the indirect approach because I
felt like it would be motivating, and encouraging to move in a successful direction. Being a
cheerleader coach you try to make everyone comfortable in the role so that everyone would be
able to stick together as one. I feel there are three key elements to a successful team
communication, conflict resolution, and critical thinking.
*Communication-First and foremost communication is key, communication is very
important when working as a team. Ineffective communication is one of the main reasons why
tension or teammates fail to comply. Team leaders who develop great communication skills are
, able to use listening skills and nonverbal tactics in order to improve and have effective
communication. It is very important for a team leader to be able to balance time limits and a
heavy workload to get things done in a timely manner. Great communication skills allows team
leaders to speak effectively, and give the advantage to be able to keeps thoughts organized and
straight to the point. Giving and receiving is another key point that can always use improvement
to develop better communication. When using effective methods, in most cases feedback can be
used to reinforce or change certain behaviors. For instance there was a time when one of my
cheerleaders didn’t show up to our first game. I wasn’t notified at all no call no text or anything.
I was upset because she played a major role in one of the stunts that we were doing, so I
immediately had put together another plan to successfully do a good performance. I was a bit
frustrated but, I figured it out, me and my team did just fine. The next day I heard from her and
she was actually in a bad accident and had to sit out actually the next couple games. I’m glad that
I didn’t approach her with an attitude or treat her with a cold shoulder. It goes back to
communication which is so important in everyday life.
* Conflict resolution- Occurs when parties can’t seem to as one. With a team leader leading
a team this is a common issue that he/she will face. A team leader ability to define and identify
conflict styles, origins, and approaches for handling conflict can improve the team’s productivity.
This is when the team leader have to step in and try to resolve this issue in the most peaceful way
possible, and both parties feel like they achieve a win-win situation in the end.
* Critical thinking- This is very important to a team leader when you have to figure out
how to logically, deliberately, and collaboratively make decisions, and solve problems
throughout the team. In a study by Pearson it states that “the higher up the ladder a position is,
the more essential critical thinking becomes.” Meaning that the bigger the job description is the
more you will have to use and utilize critical thinking. A team leader with critical thinking skills
can improve a step-by-step route that will mark the problem to an evolving solution. Critical
