SOC 101
Dr. Gabal
Director, Diversity and Ethics
Herringbone University
Dear Dr. Gabal:
I am writing in response to an opening on your Diversity and Ethics Committee. Please find my
responses to the questions on the job ad below.
Describe how your background and unique perspectives would be a valuable addition to
the team:
I am writing to you in response to the (Example Here) position advertisement listed on your
website. I would like to convey my interest in the position as I am extremely confident that I
possess all the necessary qualifications to fulfill the role. Over the past ten years, I have worked
in Customer Service, Technical Support and most importantly Sales. Working for companies
like Apple, Kelly Connect, T-Mobile and Best Buy; I have learned that customer service and
sales is not a numbers game, it’s a relationship building business. Therefore, I put an emphasis
on listening, guiding, and innovatively right fitting my customer needs.
Give an example of a time when you intentionally looked at other diverse and ethical
perspectives in order to make a better/more ethical decision:
Although there were no sociological concerns if it is pertaining to concerning the development,
structure, and functioning of human society; however, there was a time that I had quite the
misunderstanding due to diversity with a coworker. While I was employed at Apple, after hours
the company outsource so that our customers can enjoy a 24/7 customer service experience.
These coworker's lived in India. We were to work closely with them to completely satisfy the
needs of our customer base. I was working with a coworker from India on a case that the
customer was only available after hours to fix their issue. The coworker wanted me to address
him by Mr. (his last name here). However, I saw this coworker as my equal and felt no reason to
put respect on his name. I continued calling him by his first name and this coworker reported me.
We had to have a sit-down and it was explained to me that in his country, women are to address
the men in a specific way. I certainly did not agree with this, however I made a ethical decision
to respect his culture and call him what he wanted me to. Sometimes it is hard to understand
others cultures when you do not think like them.
In one paragraph, answer questions based on the scenario below:
