, Abstract:
This is an overview of the chapters: Structure and Properties of Ceramics
and Applications and Processing of Ceramics. The Structure and Properties of
Ceramics gives detailed information on the crystal structures of ceramics, ceramics
mainly composed of silica, carbon, and its various forms; the flaws in ceramics,
including the Frenkel and the Schottky defects; the phase diagrams of ceramics;
impurities that may be found in ceramics; the mechanical characteristics of
ceramics, including their brittle structures and their behavior in relation to stress
and strain; by which mechanisms diffusion in ionic materials occur, various
mechanical considerations and how crystalline and non-crystalline ceramics
undergo plastic deformation. The Applications and Processing of Ceramics
explains how ceramics are classified based on their applications and how the
fabrication and processing are done to impart knowledge on how the thermal and
mechanical characteristics affect the applications and processing of ceramics.
