Week 5:
Knowledge Generation Through Nursing Informatics
In one of the reading assignments this week you reviewed advance nurse practitioner (APN) roles
and the application of project management concepts, one of the major elements of NI, but new to
most nurses. What type of application does this have for your practice?
Project management is described as a planned set of interventions to meet the goals or objectives based on
a specific timeline. As nurses there will be similarities between the process of a project management and
the nursing process, just the main difference is that nurses will be working with the project instead of the
patients. (Sipes, C. 2016). Project management concepts as an APN it is like following the nursing
process of assessment, planning, implementations and evaluations during information technology
implementations in nursing care. APN's are used to organizing the specific patient care plan and manage
the care process to achieve a certain patient outcome in a reasonable amount of time (Sipes, 2016).
As nurses we implement the idea of project management in our daily basis. It required a plan to take care
of 5 to 6 patients when we are in the floor. We are expected to do assessments, to prioritize, to chart, and
to collaborate with the physicians and others health care team to provide each patient the best care. And
for it to happen it is required to have a plan and management skills. Project management has allowed for
structure to healthcare using an organized framework to help improve patient care efficiently (Sipes,
2016).The ultimate goal of projects is to improve patient care (Crawford et al. 2002)
Project management approach can be easily and quickly apply to the existing management approaches in
virtually any organization to help managers and staff complete projects successfully, deal effectively with
work load stress, learn better, and develop basic management skills that will serve them well throughout
their careers. Now in the hospital they are implementing a project. It is called TeleTracking, a patient flow
process, where will make easier the patient placement. The purpose of it so decreased length of stay,
decreased readmissions, increased customer satisfaction and the capture of additional information of the
status of the patient.
At the end even if we go for NI or not, we will be part of it. Because we used it in our daily basis, and if a
NI specialist needs our input to create a project, we will be participating in it.
