, 1 INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME
We are pleased to welcome you to the MAT0511 module and hope that you will find it both inter-
esting and rewarding. We shall do our best to make your study of this module successful. You
will be well on your way to success if you start studying early in the year and resolve to do the
assignments properly. Do not give your assignments to people to do for you.
This tutorial letter, Tutorial Letter 101, which is your first tutorial letter for MAT0511, is particularly
important because it contains all the assignment questions, except for the last assignment
which is last year’s exam paper. It also contains important information about the scheme of work,
resources and exam admission procedures for this module. We urge you to read it carefully and to
keep it at hand when working through the study material, preparing the assignments, preparing for
the examination and addressing questions to your lecturers.
You will receive a number of tutorial letters during the year, which is our way of communicating with
you about teaching, learning and assessment.
We suggest you keep a separate file for all your MAT0511 tutorial letters, so that you will be able to
refer to them easily, whenever necessary.
Take note that the my STUDIES @ Unisa brochure (which you received with your tutorial matter)
contains an A-Z guide of the most relevant study information.
1.1 Tutorial matter
1.1.1 Inventory letter
After registration, an inventory letter will be sent to you together with your study material. This
letter will tell you what you have to receive in your study package and also shows items that are
still outstanding.
Check the study material against the inventory letter when you have received it. You should have
received all the items listed in the inventory, unless there is a statement like “out of stock” or “not
available”. Tutorial matter that is not available when you register will be posted to you as soon as
possible, but is also available on myUnisa at http://my.unisa.ac.za.
PLEASE NOTE: Your lecturers can not help you with outstanding or missing study material.
Please contact in connection with this matter.
See the booklet entitled: Study @ Unisa for contact details.
1.1.2 The MAT0511 study material
The Despatch Department will post all tutorial matter to you, not only that which is available at
registration but right through the year.
Your study material consists of:
• Tutorial letter 101 (this tutorial letter)
• 4 books (called Study Guides)
• Several other tutorial letters (not all available at registration)
• Solutions to the assignments (will be sent out after the closing dates)
