MATHEMATICS 7
Topic: Sets, Defining Sets, Cardinality of Sets
Learning Objective:
At the end of this topic discussion, students are able to:
1. Understand sets and its significance
2. Differentiate the types of sets
3. Define sets in two ways
4. Know the Cardinality of Sets
SETS
Set- well-defined collectionof distinct objects.
-contains elements enclosed in brackets or curly braces
How to Write Sets?
Example:
High School Teachers:
{ Sir Ace, Sir Vic, Ma’am Gwynne, Ma’am Mechelle, Ma’am Kez, M’am Faye)
Sets are usually named using Capital letters. This is the traditional rule. So let's name this set as
"A". Then we have:
A={ Sir Ace, Sir Vic, Ma’am Gwynne, Ma’am Mechelle, Ma’am Kez, M’am Faye)
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SETS
1.EMPTY SET
2.SINGLETONSETS
3.FINITE SETS
4.INFINITE SETS
5.EQUAL SETS
6.EQUIVALENT SETS
7.UNIVERSAL SETS
8.SUBSETS
EMPTY SET:
This means that there are no elements in the set. This set is represented by ϕ or {}. An empty set
is hence defined as:
Definition: If a set doesn’t have any elements, it is also known as null set or void set.
Example:
1. Between 1904 and 1908, there is no leap year. Name the set as Sey P. So, P = ϕ or P={}
