, QUESTION 1:
School culture refers to the environment that is created by the educators for all the different
cultures they will interact with in the classroom so that learners can feel safe to express their
culture at school, the same way they would at home. Each learner’s culture must be
acknowledged and respected and it is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure that every culture has
a place in the classroom and no culture should be discriminated against. A positive school climate
and school culture promote student’s ability to learn.

QUESTION 2:
School X has a very diverse culture. The learners all speak many different languages, and some
learners cannot receive education in their home language, like Setswana, so they are taught in
their second language. Not only is there diversity in language but the learner’s learning abilities
differ.
School X started out with 570 learners in 2008-2009, grew to 800 learners in 4-5 years (2012-
2013). The learners identified with learning disabilities started at 25 in 2008 – 2009, and grew to
65 learners in 2012 – 2013. There are a few learners with physical disabilities, for example one in
a wheelchair, two with Autism Spectrum Disorder, one with scoliosis (abnormality of the spine) and
a few others with ordinary learning disabilities.
The school has mainstream and ELSEN classrooms, and it’s characterised by a few different
cultures and racial groups, for example Setswana, Afrikaans and English. All of those are
separated because all of them will receive education in their home language, except for Setswana
learners who will receive education in English, their second language.
Classrooms are overcrowded because even though the number of learners increased, the number
of teaching staff did not increase. This can contribute to the struggle of the learners who have
learning disability because those learners cannot get the attention needed for them to succeed, or
at least move forward.
With a school that has such a diverse culture, it makes it difficult to treat all learners the same, and
one cannot expect everyone to achieve the same goals, because they all grew up different. Some
of them grew up in stable, loving and caring homes, while others grew up in very bad
circumstances or in a very poor environment. Some was born into families where to them it is okay
to drink while being pregnant, and that is another disability recognised at some learners, Fatal
Alcohol Syndrome.

QUESTION 3:
I can be caring – I can try to find out what kids are without friends. Then I can try to find a friend for
that learner, or a group where he/she fits in.
I can be generous – I can give stationary to those in need or prepare meals for the hungry
learners. I can be understanding: If I can see a child is a little under the weather, I should go and
find out what it wrong and what I can do for that learner. If a learner didn’t do his/her homework, I
shouldn’t just go and punish the child, I should find out WHY their homework isn’t done and then
take it from there.
I can be thoughtful – Not all learners grow up in homes where money isn’t a problem. If I give a
project to do for the learners, I should perhaps try to create a project they can make out of
trash…we are then re-using.
