Weekly exercise 5

1. What are the factors are important in parting and grooving?
Parting and grooving are essential aspects of the turning process and the metalworking industry
faces a constant challenge to integrate methods that will increase efficiency and decrease
downtime for these operations.
The importance of parting and grooving operations in the turning process and that multiple
factors need to be considered for every application, including machine tool selection, the type of
material being parted/grooved, required depth of cut, and feed and speed rates.

The greatest factor is the rigidity of the machine setup and tool used, and limiting the time in cut
to allow for longer service life of the tools.

Solving machining challenges

One of the main factors in all parting and grooving operations is to minimize tool overhang
wherever possible. However, when parting-off large diameter bars, long overhang is
unavoidable. This means the tool has to compensate for the inherent instability of the operation,
offering the capability for safe, reliable machining that is also highly competitive.

The narrow blade challenges

Parting-off and deep grooving are operations that make most operators nervous. Ultra-thin
inserts and holders, matched with high rpm and tough materials, they are necessary for parting-
off in order to help avoid material wastage

Increased speed and tool life
The insert edge matters
In parting-off, there are three stages of the plunge: the main long cut through most of the
bar; the approach towards the end of the cut; and the short stage just before reaching the
center line
Ease of use
Stable internal grooving
The Groove or surface
Consider the following quality demands of the groove or surface to be machined:

 Type of application (e.g., parting-off or internal grooving)
 Cutting depth and cutting width
 Corner radius
 Quality demand

, The component
Take a look at the components of the materials after selecting the quality demand and Here are some of
the components to be considered:

 Does the material have good chip-breaking qualities?
 Is chip evacuation/control a critical issue?
 Batch size – a single groove or mass production of grooves? Mass production justifies an
optimized Tailor-Made tool to maximize productivity.
 Can the component be fixed securely?

The machine

Machine considerations include:

 Stability, power, and torque, especially for larger components
 Cutting fluid and coolant supply
 Is high pressure coolant for chip-breaking in long chipping materials necessary?
 Tool changing times/number of tools in turret
 Limitations in rpm, especially for bar feed magazine and small diameters
 Sub-spindle or tail stock available?

2. What do you need to know when you start making external and internal
threading?
Threading is the process of creating a screw thread.
There are many methods of generating threads, including subtractive methods (many kinds of
thread cutting and grinding, deformative or transformative methods (rolling and forming;
molding and casting); additive methods (such as 3D printing)
Before, you start making external and internal threading you need to know the following :
o Internal threads refer to those on nuts and tapped holes, while external threads are
those on bolts, studs, or screws.

o Internal threads are formed using an unscrewing mechanism within the tooling, whilst
External threads are molded by splitting the mold across the parting line.
o The thread form is the configuration of the thread in an axial plane; or more simply, it is
the profile of the thread, composed of the crest, root, and flanks.

o External threads are on the outside of the part, while internal threads are on the inside
of the product and the purpose of having threads is to join parts together while providing
the opportunity to assemble and disassemble in the future versus a permanent situation
