Psychological assessment is the attempt of a skilled professional to use the techniques and established measures of psychology to learn either general or specific facts about another person, either to inform others of how they function now, or to predict their behaviour and functioning in the future, and to plan suitable interventions should concern over current functioning arise. There are many different measures available and it is important that we consider the most appropriate measure in any given situation and take into account the individual needs of the test taker at all times. We also need to be aware of any limitations of the measures we use and understand that psychological tools are only one facet of the assessment process. Various factors need to be taken into consideration when assessing people in general. These factors include, but are not limited to, the biological, intra-psychic and environmental context in which the individual belongs. With reference to child assessment in particular, it is important that we apply the principles of childhood assessment wherever we can.
