CHEM 120 Unit 7 Discussion: Flow of Genetic Information WITH ASSURED GRADE A SCORE
CHEM 120 Unit 7 Discussion: Flow of Genetic Information WITH ASSURED GRADE A SCORE Initial Post Instructions In the news, we often hear examples of how DNA or the transfer of genetic information impacted someone's life. Examples range from DNA fingerprinting to genetically engineered organisms to an individual with a genetic disease. In each of these scenarios, the structure of nucleic acids and the flow of genetic information through mRNA to protein are involved. Using an example from the news or a scholarly article, describe how the structure of DNA or the transfer of genetic information impacted someone's life. Be sure to use at least one source and include at least one APA formatted citation. OR Genetics is a rapidly evolving area of science. Each year advances in genetics bring exciting new technologies to the market. Areas such as forensics, genealogy, and healthcare have all been affected by new genetic technologies. Choose a genetic technology and report on how this technology is affecting or will effect our lives. Give at least one outside source and cite in APA format. Forensics genetic testing or DNA profiling has always fascinated me. One channel I have on religiously is the investigation discovery. While watching it one day I came across a show that was playing on that network (originally on ABC) called The Genetic Detective. CeCe Moore works with various police department to investigate by using genealogy. It stated when she wanted to build her own family tree and while she was doing that DNA testing became available to the public though such websites like 23andme. This was the first time you could start to find distance relatives on the web though your DNA. One thing let into another she started to help people with finding birth parents, brothers, sisters, all other relatives. If you share a significant amount of DNA with someone you then must share a common ancestor. For instance, she takes someone who could’ve been adopted and see that there are some DNA that matches from 1 or 2 distance cousins. Then making a genetic network and does descendancy research. After that she starts to work forward linking great grandparents to grandparents to birth parents. Using this she knew that she could use old DNA from crime scenes to then link that unknown DNA to any ancestors if there was any trace of the same DNA. While it wasn’t CeCe that was the help behind the Golden State Killer, genealogy was behind that. This new technology has affected a lot of people lives. Weather it is to finally give closure to families that didn’t know what had happen to their love ones, or its killers one the run for years finally getting caught. Some believe that they should have privacy when it comes to uploading their genetic data on these websites (Guerrini, 2018). While that can be a whole other discussion, I feel that Forensics genetic testing is a good thing that technology has produced. This technology can help solve cases sooner and close some cold cases that couldn’t be solved at the time.
