Mechanical Hazard of Rebar Bending Process
Description of Process
Worker positioned the rebar in between the fixed wheel and the gyre wheel on top of the
work bench. After aligning the rebar, the worker holds the rebar and press the foot pedal
to start the bending process. The hazard that arises from this process is when the worker’s
hand is caught in between the rebar and the gyre wheel while the bending process is
ongoing. As the wheel turn to bend the rebar, the pressure exerted from the gyre wheel
will cause serious injury to the trapped hand.
, Risk Assessment
To assess the risks, the process is broken down into work activities to identify the individual hazards. Additionally, previous accident records
are analyzed to find out the injury trend related to the rebar bending process. I will also conduct a physical observation on site to understand
how the process is carried out by the workers to ensure a comprehensive list of hazards are compiled. The identified hazards are compiled into
a table and the risks are evaluated to determine the risk level of the hazards. The risk level is determined using the 5x5 risk assessment matrix
in Appendix 1. The following table showed one of the mechanical hazard I had identified through the assessment of the hazards and the risks
that arise from the rebar bending process:
Hazard / Risk Identification Risk Evaluation
Ref Work Activity Hazard Possible Risks Severity Likelihood Risk Level
Hand caught in between rebar
and gyre wheel Crush, amputation 4 3 12
According to the risk level as indicated in Appendix 1, the risk level associated with the hazards identified are in the medium level and listed
as tolerable. However, the risk of getting seriously injured can be reduced by introducing control measures to mitigate the risks.
