Cone health based out of Greensboro, NC has been known in the area for its innovation
and high level of patient care. Cone health is a not-for-profit healthcare network that consists of
more than 13,000 employees, including more than 1,800 physicians and over 1,000 volunteers
(Cone Health, 2021). Cone health services a large area and number of residents within North
Carolina with five hospitals and five urgent care facilities. It is important for a provider such as
Cone Health that services such a large area and many patients on a daily basis to strive for
excellence in patient care and delivery of services. Cone Health is known to the community as
meeting and exceeding these expectations.
Prior to 2014, Cone operated a dedicated women’s hospital in Greensboro, NC. This
hospital served the community well for decades, but it eventually aged well and became outdated
and in need of serious refurbishment or replacement (Jones, 2019). Following a study of
multiple renovation options, Cone decided to move the women’s hospital to it’s main campus,
providing greater access to the resources of Cone’s flagship hospital in Greensboro (Jones,
2019). The expansion comprises approximately 150,000 square feet of new space and 40,000
square feet of interior renovation that bridges new and existing. Spaces include: three dedicated
cesarean section rooms; 18 labor, delivery and recovery rooms; fully private neonatal intensive
care unit rooms with dedicated family space and private restrooms; and dedicated rooms for
high-risk mothers (Jones, 2019).
Key stakeholders for this expansion of the hospital were the owners, employees and
volunteers providing healthcare and support, the engineers and designers, the construction crews,
