PUA 5303- Organizational Theory
Unit 1 Article Critique
Warren G. Bennis is a professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern
California. Bennis is a believer is scientific management practices as they pertain to
organizational theory. In 2002 he wrote the article Towards a ‘‘Truly’’ Scientific Management:
The Concept of Organization Health. This article focuses on the main challenges confronting
organizations and how to handle these challenges successfully. Change is forced upon
institutions due to growing interdependence between their changing boundary conditions and
society (Bennis, 2002).
The author states that “effective organization is a function of the work to be done and the
resources and techniques available to do it. The changes in methods of production bring about
changes in the number of work roles, in the distribution of work between roles and in their
relationship to one an- other. Failure to make explicit acknowledgement of this relationship
between work and organization gives rise to non-valid assumptions (e.g., that optimum
organization is a function of the personalities involved, that it is a matter connected with the
personal style and arbitrary decision of the chief executive, that there are choices between
centralized and decentralized types of organization, etc.). Our observations lead us to accept that
optimum organization must be derived from an analysis of the work to be done and the
techniques and resources available” (Bennis, 2002). This statement refers to the processes of
problem-solving by analyzing the work to be done, challenges and resources needed in a
scientific approach to continue to evolve and adapt to the necessary changes an organization
must make to keep up with the changes in society. Society is ever-changing and organizations
must adapt to these changes in order to run effectively.
