Tragic
Tragic events happen all throughout the world. Tragic events are either caused by
man/human or are caused by natural occurrences. The man caused events are usually
preventable, while the natural occurrences are not. The most important aspect when a tragic
event happens, is how society reacts to it. In August of 2005, the United States sustained a tragic
event, Hurricane Katrina. This natural disaster had a great impact in ways that would change
society as we once knew it.
Hurricane Katrina
According to Jeffrey Medlin (MIC), Ray Ball (ITO) and Gary Beeler (former WCM).
(2016). National Weather Service, Hurricane Katrina was the costliest natural tragic event to hit
the United States. In total, the article states, the hurricane cost a total of $108 Billion in damages.
The Hurricane made contact with the United States in both Florida and Louisiana. According to
(SOURCE) the total dollar amount in damages was $108 billion and 1,833 fatalities. The
damages were caused by wind, water surges, tornados and rainfall all caused by Hurricane
Katrina. Many people lost their homes, land, businesses, animals and family members. Still to
this day in 2021, some are still feeling the affects of the damage and are still trying to rebuild and
get back what was lost.
Actions
Hurricane Katrina put a spotlight on some emergency management gaps that the states
had. It also showed how weak the buildings were and helped set standards for building codes and
