Kathryn Watson used many creative ways to make a difference. The first day in class was a
disaster for her. The students not only read the book but knew the answer to all her questions. To
make matters worse she was being observed by one of the staff and he made it clear that he was
not pleased with her first class. Kathryn quickly realized early the students did not think for
themselves. She changed the syllabus and the next day she showed art that they were not familiar
with and it forced them to give their own opinions about the art even to the point where they
began to think about what art. is, she took them on a field trip to look at a piece of and told them
that they were not required to like the art or even write a paper about it, but to only consider it.
She not only wanted to teach her students about art, but she was interested in their personal lives.
These students were taught that when they marry their priority is their husband and their babies.
They even had marriage classes and how to please their husbands. Do not think about their
careers. She taught them that they could have a marriage and have a career. One student had a
dream of going to Yale and she gave her an application to Yale. Kathryn opinion was more on
the liberal side of things where this university and student were very conservative.
There were many voices of criticism throughout this movie. Her boyfriend discouraged her from
taking this position because of the university viewpoints and her own views. The teachers
discouraged her in that she did not fit in with the university. She was determined to teach her
way and not to give up on her principles. She challenged them not conform on that people expect
of you and not to compromise. A great example was Vincent van Gogh. People did not
