Unit VI Case Study
PSY 1010
Scenario 1- Raising children is not an easy task. But learning about how the human brain works
definitely helps on things to watch for when raising a child. Everyone wants to make sure that
their child is developing at the same pace as other children to make sure that they aren’t lacking
in some areas. At 5 years old the child is still in the preoperational stage of cognitive
development. The 5-year-old may be able to move freely in the world but are unable to logically
reason. According to Ciccarelli & White, they are not yet capable of logical thought, they can use
simple mental concepts but are not able to use those concepts in a more rational, logical
sense(Ciccarelli & White,2017) Being a parent is taught but when your child makes mistakes it
your job to punish them to an extent so that they know that their actions aren’t acceptable and
hopefully the punishment will deter them forever making that mistake again. In this scenario I
would explain to my daughter what she did was wrong, I would make her go apologize to the
child she shoved and give her the toy back. My child would also receive some sort of punishment
so she would understand what she did was wrong and that she doesn’t need to do it again.
Scenario 2- When dealing with teenage kids you have to keep in mind the development stage that
their mind and body are going through. Teenagers commonly think in personal fable, they
believe themselves to be unique and protected from harm (Ciccarelli & White,2017). They will
be more likely to take risk and not fear the consequences of their actions. Teenagers are very
impressionable and look for anything and everything that will give them validation or advance
their social status with their peers. In this scenario you have two punishable offenses that are both
need to be addressed. Not only do you have two punishable offenses you need to address each
teen in the situation as well. As the older sibling the 15-year-old sister needs to be in just as much
