Reflection Paper Unit VIII
Having the proper knowledge and understanding of sociological theories and concepts,
such as sociological imagination, elements of culture, and social institutions help positively
impact an individual’s life. By accurately knowing how an individual’s life may be shape or
influenced by these concepts or theories, improves one’s navigation through different scenarios
during personal, work and community interactions. As we come across different types of
cultures, upbringings, and beliefs, these concepts provide a better understanding of why some
people react or behave differently to same circumstances. Furthermore, it helps move from the
self-thinking sphere towards a more caring and willing to comprehend other’s perspectives and
points of views. Likewise, it aids in creating a more cohesive and educated approach while
interacting with people of different backgrounds.
Through this class I was able to get a better understanding how elements of culture and
social institution play an important role in shaping a person’s life. This new knowledge has
become useful when trying to work on a project where perspectives and views may collide
depending on the diversity of individuals involve. I have taken it as an opportunity to learn more
about them and where they are coming from, rather than just trying to impose my own ideas; this
has helped building stronger work relationships. Likewise, learning about norms and how they
may vary from one culture to another, has helped broadening my views and not automatically
categorized an individual as rude or uncaring without attempting to comprehend what they meant
with their actions of words.
