Community Risk Reduction is used within communities to reduce or mitigate the loss of
life and property caused by fires and other disasters which may cause destruction or harm. The
NFPA 1035 standard defines that as programs, actions, services by the community to achieve
that end goal of overall safety.
Goals and characteristics of a well-organized Community Risk Reduction program can
be defined by the following: protecting lives and properties within in a community by
implementing plans/programs which help the community have better understanding of hazards
associated with fire hazards and disasters which may occur. Identifying areas within a
community that are believed to be high risk, recognizing hazards present or which have
potential, building partnerships, improve safety and by doing so with limited resources
(Sawyer, 2016).
Additionally, goals which can be obtained through a well-developed CRR program is
the prevention of death and injuries of line of duty personnel and integrating fire
protection strategies in a community to the structures occupying it.
Fire departments help incorporate fire protection programs into a community by
getting everyone involved in participating in risk awareness. A fire protection program begins
with the experts who have extensive knowledge of hazards, those experts consist usually of
firefighting professionals within fire departments. Allowing these experts to educate the
community from a top-down approach into organizations, schools, colleges, hospitals, and any
other community- based organization. With adequate training and staffing, a community risk
reduction plan can quickly develop a well-armed approach to educating the community about
overall hazard safety.
