UNIT IV ESSAY
Introduction
In this essay we will discuss how burglary is defined and how financial reform can pre-
vent systemic injustices. As I read over the essay questions, I found it interesting and confusing
that burglary was combined with a financial reform act. The connection became clear after I read
through The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the predatory prac-
tices that were being used by the financial institutions served as a form of burglary. These preda-
tory practices and burglary have the same result, causing harm to people.
Burglary
Burglary is one of the oldest crimes within society; people have always had shelter and
dealt with criminal behavior. Through my research, I was unable to find the specific definition
for my county, because most counties use the state of Georgia’s definition. The state definition
comes from Georgia Code Title 16 and is incredibly similar to the common law definition from
our book (GA, 2014). Both definitions require that when entering the space where the theft or
felony occurs, the burglar must enter with the intent of committing the crime. Entering some-
where and deciding to commit theft after the fact is not considered a burglary. This makes it
much more difficult to prove that burglary has in fact been committed since a higher level of pre -
meditation has to be determined.
