In an organization, dealing with multiple locations and outsourcing has many challenges that
need to be faced such as cultural challenges at different physical locations, time zones are
different for different physical locations and virtual teams and outsourcing means working with
external people who are working through a vendor and who is not known or met ever with
Manager or client before. According to schema of Grant et al(1998), shown in figure 7.2,
Identity, Skills and Emotion can explained and their relations on talk and action can be seen
below.
Identity:
Identity can be seen differently based on the role of each individual working in different COPs.
Individuals might be part of multiple COP environments. This can be understood as the
multitasking aspect of linear development. Due to fast changing technologies, individuals
working in multiple COPs will have different identities. Based on the roles and responsibilities
they perform they will be titled identity based on their exclusive COPs.
Skills:
Skills are not always considered technical skills. It is important individuals have the skill to
persuade members in team to accomplish tasks in virtual and physical teams. As virtual teams,
people are not being monitored physically and they wouldn't have met face to face which
challenges to Manager or project heads to evaluate or better understand an individuals' soft and
