A Review of Energy Institutes Benchmarking Profiles
The report was authored with the primary reason being to inform the University of Texas
at Austin of the energy institutes' strategic planning process and efforts. The profiles report was
also designed in a way that could benefit other university-based energy institutes in the United
States. By identifying leading peer institutions that could provide insight and lessons on effective
practices, collaboration was made to collect information on profiles, insight, and lessons on
effective methods and general approaches that could be used to build the strength of energy
institutes.
Profile Areas of Interest
For each profile, the headers are the same. They are;

Observations from the Profiles
Expansion of the Energy Institutes
A majority of the institutes in the report were founded in the last decade. Two major
phases of institutions development were recorded, they are the years 2006 through 2009, and
2011 to 2013. There was a lapse between 2009 and 2011 due to the economic crisis bringing
about budget cuts. Outliers in the formation of institutes are MIT CEEPR and Berkeley's Energy
Institute, founded in 1977 and 1991, respectively.
