The course begins with the story of a man named Phineas Gage. Working on a construction
project in 1848 in Cavendish, Wermont, his job was to remove rocks. To do that, he used to
make holes into the rocks and then fill it with powder in it. After that he would cover it up with
dirt and sand. Accidentally, when he put tamping iron into the hole, the rocks exploded. The
event injured him. After some operations, he recovered. But his temperament and mind changed.
Because of it, he got fired. Because of the example above, we can conclude that brain is the main
source of mental life. Human ambitions and memory are collection of nerve cells and their
molecules.
