Lab 1: Social Pressure – Alone Behaviour
"Normal" behaviour is influenced by culture and illness
 People with mental disorders or who are not neurotypical may exhibit different public
behaviours
 Also need to consider the context of people's behaviour, eg. How wearing masks has
become normal

Faux pas - an embarrassing act in social situation



Lab 2: Demographic Data, Ethics and Diversity
The Ethics of Human Research
 NHMRC guidelines for research, ensure research is:
o Valuable
o Of benefit to society
o Not harmful to others
 Project must be approved by HREC (Human Research Ethics Committee)
 Information Statement (approved by HREC) must be given, and must be informed of 3
basic rights
o Do not have to participate if you do not choose to
o Not participating will not cause any disadvantage
o If you start doing the research you can stop at any time and rules 1 and
2 still apply
 Consent form


 Hypothesis = prediction of outcome - needs justification
 Direct justification - based on previous research
 Indirect justification - build a case with reason and logic as research does not directly
look at the measure of interest

Resilience - 5 tips

DASS - depression, anxiety and stress scale

Communication micro skills - things person does to indicate that they are attentive to what the other
is saying. Helpful for someone telling the story.
 Body cues - eye contact, nod, mirroring* (subconsciously copying behaviour eg.
Crossed arms)
 Verbal cues - "yes"/agreement,
 *theory of mind: how you show body language/empathy to others


What do you think stops people admitting they’re not doing so well on R U OK day or any other day?
 Struggling to make sense of own feelings
 Not wanting to be a burden to others
 Unsure of how people will react or if they could even offer support
 Not having strong support system
 Not wanting to open up/admit issues
 Not having a close to people
 Not right environment to talk about it
How can we use the listening skills we looked at in the lab to encourage people to ask for help?
 Make sure people feel comfortable sharing stories
 Show signs of engagement/support/understanding
 Let people know you appreciate them speaking out



Lab 4: coping skills part 2
Behaviourism - everything that you think/feel/do is a result of learned exposure to the environment
that changes the way your body reacts to things

 Deep breathing - body and mind pulled into relaxation

Cognitive therapy - based on the cognitive model, which states that thoughts, feelings and
behavior are all connected, and that individuals can move toward overcoming difficulties and
meeting their goals by identifying and changing unhelpful or inaccurate thinking, problematic
behavior, and distressing emotional responses.

 Naming and nurturing strengths
 Applying strengths
 Positive emotions
Deep Breathing
Stress = faster and shallower breathing = flight or fight response
Activates parasympathetic nervous system: relaxation response
