Biotechnology Lesson 1
Introduction to
biotechnology
HISTORY
In 1919, Hungarian agricultural engineer Karl Ereky
foresaw a time when biology could be used for turning raw
materials into useful products. He coined the term
biotechnology to describe the merging of biology and
technology. Biotechnology refers to the manipulation
through genetic engineering of living organisms or their
components to produce useful products such as pest-
resistant crops, enhanced quality of crops, new bacterial
strain, etc. It could be divided into two major categories,
modern and traditional biotechnology.

genetic make up or the DNA of

the organism.
