03.07 Practice AP Language Essay Prompt Have you ever become an expert on something or discovered something new without and mistakes or errors? Probably not. Mistakes and errors are components that allow humans to create, learn, and do new things. This concept is one that Lewis Thomas states in The Medusa and the Snail. In this passage, Thomas discusses the different ways that we must first fail in order to succeed and the importance of this occurrence. I agree with his point of view and that in order for us to prosper as a society and species, we must fail and learn from a variety of tasks and challenges. Whenever there are issues in a situation, people are encouraged to figure out what is wrong. For example, if you are watching TV and the remote stops working, you’re going to feel compelled to get up and find out what is wrong. This is similar to how error and problems leads to the creation of countless concepts and ideas. Through these problems that people face, those who decide to make a change and improve or fix this issue become the real innovators of the country. As Thomas says in the passage, “What is needed, for progress to be made, is the move based on error.” This reflects the overall idea that in order for things to be created and started, there must first be a problem to solve. Luckily, our world is full of problems and untapped solutions and all that it takes to find and attack these imperfections, is a person willing to find the source of the issue and improve upon it.
