Developmental Milestones Suzette Gorrell Grand Canyon University SPD 500 Dr. Jen Heath July 20, 2016 Child Development and Developmental Milestones • Child development refers to how a child grows in their abilities between birth and the age of five. • Developmental Milestones are screened through the child’s development and they are different for the child’s range in age. Development al Milestones by age • 3 through 12 months: – Motor Skills – Sensory and Thinking Skills – Language and Social Skills Developmental Milestones by age • 18 Months Old to 2 years old – Social and Emotional – Language/Communication – Cognitive – Movement/Physical Development Developmental Milestones by age • 3 through 5 years of age – Social and Emotional – Language/Communication – Cognitive – Movement/Physical Development Growth and Milestones • After birth an infant can lose anywhere from 5% to 10% of their birthweight. By 2 weeks, they should begin to gain weight. • By 4 to 6 months the birthweight should have doubled. • Between ages 1 and 2, they only gain about 5 pounds and this remains until 5 years old. • Between 2 to 10 years, the child grows at a steady pace and they hit a final growth spurt between the age of 9 and 15 years when puberty begins. ........................................continued........................................................
