Pain Relief Measures-- Anesthesia: ● Epidural vs Spinal-- know how they are different o o Epidural- *slow onset, injected into epidural space ▪ Advantages- mom alert and cooperative, only partial paralysis, gastric emptying delay, blood loss minimal, decreased effect on fetus ▪ Disadvantages- maternal hypotension, need for IV, numbness and heaviness of legs, may make labor longer related, increase pushing o Spinal block- *immediate onset of action, injected into subarachnoid space ▪ Advantages- good pain control, alert and awake, no respiratory effects ▪ Disadvantages- short acting, marked hypotension, decreased cardiac output, spinal headache, loss of motor function and sensory function ● Constant H/A when HOB elevated, sx alleviated when lying flat ● Treatment-Blood patch, caffeine intake
