i) Eliciting the Target Language from the Context
T: Well done everybody for the matching activity. Do you think the events of If
cards happened before or after the events of Result cards?
S: Before. (Many students talk together.)
T: Very good. Now, let’s look together at one example of If – Result cards.
Imagine next week, you will have a very important exam. You need to pass it.
What do you have to do?
S1: I have to study hard.
T: All right. You want to pass the exam, you have to study hard.
(Teacher writes on board: ….you study hard, you …..pass your exam.)
You can see that“pass your exam” is the result, but how about “study hard”?
Anybody knows what “study hard” indicates?
Students look blank.
T: “Study hard” is the condition. You must study hard first before you can pass
your exam. Can anybody complete this sentence?
(Teacher points out to the sentence ….you study hard, you …..pass your exam.)
Linh: If you study hard, you pass your exam.
T: Great. “If” is the correct word. Well done, Linh. It is very likely you will pass
your exam but this event will happen in the future. So, I need one word before
the main verb to indicate the future. Can anybody tell me what it is?
