Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
In my opinion, New Cutting Edge Advanced will be an excellent English course book for an
advanced class. It is communicative providing students with plenty of practice, recycling and
revision with a task – based approach. The materials in the book are well-structured and use an
appropriately graded language.
The book enables a wide range of pair/group activities to make the learning process not only
more interactive and engaging, but also to help students have an integrated practice of all the four
skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) with a good balance. Reading comprehension
section is well presented with a standard five-stage procedure. Authentic sound audios with
different English pronunciations will enhance the students’ listening skills and build their
confidence in real-life to communicate with English speakers from different countries. Students will
be able to improve their learning outcomes and have a feeling of achievement when they will first
learn from the models and then perform the tasks in the speaking and writing lessons. They will
also be able enhance their memory and improve their revision by the use of the language
summary, grammar practice, vocabulary practice and audio scripts at the end of the book.
In addition, this course book helps students to discover the real-life functional language in the
proper contexts and situations that they encounter in everyday life. It also equips the students
with a cultural knowledge through the section on World Culture. Moreover, the relevant
illustrative images, words colouring and highlighting used make the materials in the book very
attractive and clear. However, the section “After Unit 1 you can…” should better have been placed
at the beginning of the Unit instead of at the end since it expresses the aims of the Unit.
