600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials are very valuable in foreign language teaching. Firstly, they will help to
prepare learners for the ‘real’ world of communication. In fact, for this assignment, I have
selected an article from a website that is intended for native speakers (40% of its readers are
in the US1). The text is written in a language suitable for native speakers, not for teaching
purposes, to make the reading more ‘natural’. Moreover, authentic materials will create an
immersive experience for foreign language learners. The series of videos I have selected for the 2nd
activity will expose students to the different varieties of English spoken by people from different
countries, genders, ages, and backgrounds. They will help students to familiarize themselves with
different English accents and build their confidence while communicating in English in real-life
contexts. Finally, since authentic materials are in abundance on the Internet, I believe that
teachers will be free to choose relevant and interesting materials appropriate with students’
levels and needs.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I selected this text and the 12 vocabulary items for various reasons.
Firstly, I believe that the topic of the text is related to the environment and green lifestyle and is
thus suitable for this advanced class which includes 15 adult students of mixed-nationalities,
different academic, professional background and purposes to learn English. Students of C1-C2
levels will enjoy reading this article as it is intended for a native audience without any problem of
comprehension.
Moreover, instead of academic knowledge, the text provides practical advice that students can use
to improve their daily life. The text after reading also helps to facilitate discussion among students
in their other activities.
Finally, I am convinced that the 12 selected vocabulary items are the most challenging ones in the
text and are appropriate for this advanced level. Studying them will enhance the students’
vocabulary as well as their pronunciation.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
My activities are appropriate for this class because I believe that they are both creative and
challenging enough for students at the advanced level.
