1. Contrast Belmont and Venice in four or five sentences. Explain which major characters live and work in each city. Explain which part of the main plot takes place in each city. Belmont is a christian island where there is peace and love whereas Venice is a port where merchants buy and sell from all over the world as well as a place where there is much hostility between the Jews and the Christians. Catos daughter, Portia, is the heir of Belmont where she lives along with her maid, Nerissa. In Venice, Bassanio, Shylock and Antonio reside. The plot of the three caskets takes place in Belmont. The other plot concerning the pound of flesh takes place in Venice. 2. Give four examples of "appearances versus reality" In other words, how do four things or people in the play Merchant appear to be one thing, when in fact they are another? The first example of "appearances versus reality" is that the two showiest were the wrong one's to choose and the least showiest casket was the correct one to choose. Another example is of Shylock, when he appears to want the friendship of Antonio when he in fact is hoping for an opportinity for revenage. The third example is when Bassanio pretends to be a wealthy suitor with rich attire, a fancy boat, and servants accompanying him; all which his kingsman, Antonio, provided for him. A final example would be of Portia, when she is able to disguise herself as a male lawyer and uses her wisdom to spare the life of Antonio when she was merely just a young woman. 3. From Merchant, give four examples of the need to "give and hazard all he has" In other words, which good characters risk everything they have, even their lives, in order to help or save another person? The first example of "give and hazard all he has", would be when Antonio incurres a debt that includes a pound of flesh for the sake of his friend, Bassanios, happiness. Another example would be that Portia is willing to risk Belont, her fortune and her love all for Bassanio
