Food For Thought: Lady Liberty is one of my favorite subjects. She is known as Marianne in the French culture. This painting falls under Romanticism since there are no hard lines and instead focused more on colors and forms. It is believed the Statue of Liberty was modeled after Marianne. Sometimes students will ask me why Marianne is showing her breasts. Her free breasts depict freedom. That notion that breasts should be covered, she must wear supports to control them, they are not to be seen….she takes that all away not caring what he has been told she must due to please others. It is a statement. It is bold. It also can be shocking to the viewer to gain
